Baltimore Man Arrested, Nephew Dead After Police-Involved Shooting In Woodlawn
WOODLAWN, Md. (WJZ)— Baltimore County Police say they were forced to open fire on two suspects after they dragged an officer with their minivan. Now one man is hospitalized, a 23-year-old is dead and his uncle is in custody.
Mike Schuh has more on the robbery call in Woodlawn that led to a fatal shooting.
Police say around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of a home burglary in the 5400-block of Dogwood Road.
As he attempted to flee the scene, police say Leon Harvey, 54, was apprehended by a K-9 officer. He has been charged with burglary and related offenses and is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center on $200,000 bail.
His nephew Allen Harvey Jr.'s life ended when he tried to flee in a minivan.
"Once he wouldn't stop, they just opened up fire," said witness Michael Jones.
"When the first officer arrived on the scene, he noticed two subjects exiting the home, running towards a minivan and getting in that minivan. That officer approached those subjects and attempted to get the minivan to stop," said Baltimore County Police Cpl. John Wachter.
Police say Allen Harvey, the driver of the minivan, refused to stop.
"I heard a lot of screaming at that time.`Halt,' `Stop,'" Jones said. "A lot of screaming."
In fact, police say Allen Harvey actually grabbed the officer's arm, held him and drove away.
Baltimore County police say as the suspects tried to flee--still dragging that officer from the window--additional officers arrived. When the suspect refused to stop, the officers opened fire.
"The two subjects in the van were struck; the van then struck a parked vehicle," Wachter said.
Police say Allen Harvey was rushed to Shock Trauma and pronounced dead. The passenger in the van remains hospitalized at Shock Trauma. Charges will be filed upon his release from treatment.
The names of the officers involved in this incident are not being released at this time. Those officers will be placed on administrative duty while the incident is reviewed.
