Baltimore Longshoremen Approve Contract
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Members of Baltimore's largest dockworkers union have agreed to a new contract.
The Baltimore Sun reports (http://bsun.md/1Guhc6z ) that International Longshoremen's Association Local 333 members voted Wednesday to approve the contract, ending a nearly 18-month standoff.
The contract includes wage increases, ensures that all jobs will be filled with ILA labor and ends the hiring of nonunion workers off the pier. It also forgives a $3.8 million damages award assessed against Local 333 after a three-day strike in 2013.
A tally was not released, but Helen Delich Bentley, a former congresswoman and current Maryland Port Administration adviser, says the contract passed by a few votes.
The agreement complements a master contract that governs container cargo handled by ILA labor at ports from Maine to Texas. Both expire Sept. 30, 2018.
