Baltimore Is Quickly Becoming One Of The Best Areas For Tech Jobs
As the Baltimore economy evolves beyond the traditional manufacturing and industrial sectors of its past, one of the fastest-growing areas would most likely be a surprise.
A recent article from the Baltimore Business Journal revealed that the information technology field is booming across the nation. According to the article, published March 13, 2013, "IT jobs nationally, rose 0.38 percent in February to nearly 4.4 million and are up 4.57 percent from a year ago, according to Alexandria, VA.-based trade group TechServe." As a result of this national jump and Maryland being a leader in cyber security, the employment arena is looking very promising for Baltimore job seekers.
Not only are more jobs becoming available, but working for a technology company in the Baltimore area seems to benefit its employees. Baltimore Magazine released the 25 "Best Places To Work 2013," with four of the companies on the list being technology focused.
Among those listed were Ciena Corporation, Columbia Technology Partners, Exceptional Software Strategies and Phoenix Technology Solutions.
There have been a number of recent developments on the Baltimore tech scene that should encourage job seekers and entrepreneurs alike, including:
- The recent founding of Betamore, a technology and entrepreneurship incubator located in the city's Federal Hill neighborhood.
- A newly announced partnership between Howard County and Johns Hopkins University to launch a tech accelerator focused on commercial technology.
- TowsonGlobal's shift to the education technology arena, under the interim direction of Baltimore venture capitalist and former educator Frank Bonsal III.
- A January Forbes.com article features Baltimore's innovative Digital Harbor Tech Center, an experiential education center where future tech sector workers are learning their craft.
These positive developments are a good sign for the present and growing future of Baltimore's technology sector, and good news for area job seekers looking for careers that offer stability and growth.
