Baltimore Incinerator Operator To Pay $77K Fine
BALTIMORE (AP) -- State officials say the operator of a Baltimore incinerator has agreed to pay a $77,500 fine to settle alleged air pollution violations.
The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Attorney General's office announced the settlement Tuesday with Wheelabrator Baltimore, L.P. The Department of the Environment says the incinerator exceeded its mercury emission limit during a 2010 compliance test and reported the year before that an employee mistakenly shut off a mercury control system.
Wheelabrator issued a statement saying the incinerator has an excellent compliance record and the company believes that no regulatory enforcement actions were warranted, but it settled to resolve the matter. The company also noted it reported the two events and said no threat to the public or environment occurred as a result.
