Baltimore Financial Analyst Uses Business Degree To Pay It Forward

In an article on usnews.com, one of the perks of a financial analyst position is that "the paycheck is good;" however, "competition for these jobs is fierce, especially among analysts new to the field." Because these professionals are in such high demand, experts advise that they gain work experience while studying, and take advantage of networking opportunities. Manisha Thakor, Founder and CEO of MoneyZen Wealth Management, is quoted in the article as saying of networking and job-shadowing, "Remember to keep one hand in the books, and one hand out shaking new ones."

Those with a degree in finance, however, will not find employment opportunities limited to accountant and auditor positions. Ankita Maini is an analyst for Constellation, an energy company in Baltimore, and works as a tutor for Frog Tutoring to help others in the field of business. Maini offers some insight on how to utilize a business and finance degree for increased career opportunities.

How does your educational background relate to your current role?

"I did my undergraduate degree from a reputed college in India, where my major was accounting and business. After that, I obtained my master's degree in finance from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. I work in the financial operations department, where I use the knowledge from my master's program. Having a finance background helps me to easily understand different aspects of the business. I have helped numerous students with subjects like math, accounting, and finance through my tutoring services. I am also involved in volunteer activities outside work, most of them related to education, as I am a firm believer in it."

How has your education helped to further your career?

"Education has immensely helped me build my career, plus the motivation and hard work. Having done honors classes at my undergraduate level helped me to qualify for a U.S. master's program."

What advice can you offer others going into this field?

"If I am qualified to give any advice to an aspiring professional, it will be to do what you like to do because motivation is a key player in professional success. A dream of seeing yourself in a position drives you to work hard, but it's important to promise yourself that you will excel no matter what field you pick."
