Baltimore Entrepreneur Eager To Nourish Her Dream
Dawn Koslowski, a former banking executive, decided to become a business owner herself by opening the first of three prospective men's grooming salons known as 18/8 Fine Men's Salons, located in The Shops at Quarry Lake, Baltimore. A second salon is planned for 2016 in Hunt Valley.
Koslowski graduated from Stevenson University with a B.S. in business administration and she received an ABA degree and leadership certificate from Stonier College, the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business. She also brings to this new endeavor almost twenty years of experience in commercial and residential lending.
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
"I was inspired to become an entrepreneur due to the business experiences I had with other entrepreneurs in my career as a commercial lender. I wanted something more out of my life and career; I wanted to build something that was created and nurtured by me."
How does your educational background relate to your current role?
"My bachelor's degree reinforced the logistics of running a business. I went back to school late in life, earning my bachelor's degree at the age of forty, so I had a lot of life/business experience that really enhanced my educational experience in college. I don't believe, however, that everyone needs to earn a degree to become an entrepreneur. I have known many people who have succeeded as a CEO of a company without it. It was a personal desire and decision of mine to further my education."
How has your education helped to further your career and contributed to your success?
"My education helped me understand how a business should function. It wasn't, however, until I had combined my education with my real world experiences that I was truly propelled forward into becoming an entrepreneur. At the end of the day, your education stays with you no matter what and no one can take that away from you!"
What is some advice you can offer others looking to become entrepreneurs?
"Do your homework, prepare for the opportunity and plan, plan, plan. If you want to become an entrepreneur, it's about finding your passion, knowing what makes you do what you do everyday, and what drives you to be the best you can be. This is a very powerful basis for living out your dream."
