Suspect Killed, Another Injured In Woodlawn Police Shooting
WOODLAWN, Md. (WJZ)— Baltimore County Police say they were forced to shoot two men after they dragged an officer with their minivan.
Kai Jackson spoke to witnesses at the chaotic scene.
Sky Eye Chopper 13 was over a police-involved shooting in Woodlawn Tuesday.
"Once he wouldn't stop, they just opened up fire," said witness Michael Jones.
Police say around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of a home burglary in the 5400-block of Dogwood Road.
"When the first officer arrived on the scene, he noticed two subjects exiting the home, running towards a minivan and getting in that minivan. That officer approached those subjects and attempted to get the minivan to stop," said Baltimore County Police Cpl. John Wachter.
Police say the driver of the minivan didn't stop.
"I heard a lot of screaming at that time. `Halt,' `Stop,'" Jones said. "A lot of screaming."
In fact, police say he actually grabbed the officer's arm, held him and drove away.
Baltimore County Police say as the suspects tried to flee--still dragging that officer from the window--additional officers arrived. When the suspect refused to stop, the officers opened fire.
"The two subjects in the van were struck; the van then struck a parked vehicle," Wachter said.
Police say the driver of the van was rushed to Shock Trauma and pronounced dead. The passenger in the van was taken to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.
Neon markers indicated the place shell casings and other evidence was found. It's been a chaotic day that has shaken residents in the quiet neighborhood.
"This has been a quiet neighborhood. I've lived here for over 40 years, so to hear something happened like this in our neighborhood is kind of alarming," said Carolyn Perrin.
The officers involved are on administrative duty while the shooting is investigated.
