Baltimore County Plans New $5M Animal Services Facility
TOWSON, Md. (WJZ)— A new animal services facility is coming to Baltimore County. The $5 million project will be built on the 14 acres of land where the current facility is located.
Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz and Director of Health and Human Services Dr. Gregory Wm. Branch announced plans Monday.
"Today is a great day for Baltimore County pets and pet owners," Kamenetz said in a release. "My leadership team has worked hard to come up with a comprehensive solution that will improve services for people and pets and increase the number of pet adoptions. This is going to be a wonderful, modern facility that the people of Baltimore County can be proud of for years to come."
The new space will include increased kennel space, an adoption meet and greet room, a spay/neuter surgical suite, an outside dog exercise area, a dog park for use by the public, a cat observation and socialization room, additional parking, and office space for staff and volunteers.
Branch says the current facility is more than 30 years old and inadequate in size and design to meet demand.
"Over the years we have received numerous complaints about our aging facility from potential adopters and animal advocates, so I applaud the county executive and his leadership for making this major project possible," Branch said in a release.
In about a week, the county will provide spay/neuter services onsite at the Animal Services Division in Baldwin, Md. Adoptable pets will be spayed or neutered prior to going to their new homes. This new service will be covered by the existing $65 adoption fee, which also includes a microchip with lifetime registry, a license, the first series of vaccinations, a rabies shot and a welcome home packet.
Baltimore County Animal Control Division will now be referred to as the Animal Services Division.
"This name change more accurately reflects the scope of this division's work, which includes administration, enforcement and shelter operations," Kamenetz said.
