Baltimore County Councilman Todd Huff's Future Unclear After DUI Arrest
TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) -- No court date set yet for the Baltimore County councilman arrested for driving under the influence and allegedly trying to get special treatment.
Derek Valcourt spoke with the council executive about the incident and has the latest on the allegations against Councilman Todd Huff.
Our repeated phone calls to Councilman Todd Huff and to his attorney have not been returned. His future on the County Council--whether he plans to resign or not--remains unclear.
Baltimore County Councilman Todd Huff admits he made "a very poor decision" on Saturday night. That's when county police say they arrested Huff after stopping his county owned vehicle as it was driving erratically down York Road without its headlights on.
According to police charging documents, officers say Huff stumbled, staggered and slurred before registering a .20--more than twice the legal limit.
Investigators say he also called Baltimore County's police chief three times that night.
"Hey Jim, it's Todd. Apparently I was pulled over because I didn't have my headlights on, but um, yeah and I was drinking. Can you please call me back, alright, on my cell phone. Thanks. Bye," Huff said in a voicemail.
Police insist Huff did not get special treatment.
"I feel confident I am the right person to represent Baltimore County Council 3rd District," Huff said in a campaign video.
Sources say Huff has already surrendered his county owned vehicle. He has not responded to our repeated requests for an interview.
Thursday, WJZ asked County Executive Kevin Kamenetz about Huff's future on the County Council.
Valcourt: "Do you think Councilman Huff should resign?"
Kamenetz: "Listen, the councilman has indicated he used poor judgment, he regrets his behavior. But I have to tell you, we elect human beings to office. And he's a human being, and human beings make mistakes. Obviously if he wanted to resign, that's his personal decision. But the key is obviously how he learns from his mistakes and moves forward."
The county state's attorney says that he will ask an outside prosecutor to handle this case to avoid any appearance of impropriety.
The County Council is set to meet Monday at 6 p.m.
