Evidence Suggests County Councilman Arrested For DUI Sought Special Treatment
TOWSON, Md. (WJZ)—A Baltimore County councilman arrested for drunk driving over the weekend reacts to the allegations.
Adam May reports the county councilman wanted special treatment.
Monday we learned that Baltimore County Councilman Todd Huff called the chief of police three times. Now people who live in his district are calling on him to resign.
Councilman Huff looked nothing like his official picture when he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence over the weekend.
Elected in 2010, the District 3 Republican represents central and northern Baltimore County.
Around 3 a.m. Saturday, police say Huff drove a county-owned vehicle down York Road without his headlights on.
When police stopped him for erratic driving, Huff pulled into an auto repair business his family owns.
According to police charging documents Huff asked arresting officers, "Don't you know who I am?"
He admitted, "Yeah, I've had a few drinks" and he asked "Do we really need to be doing this?"
Then police say Huff called the police chief repeatedly.
"The chief received three messages in the middle of the night from Councilman Huff. He did not respond to them," said Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost.
Police say Huff stumbled, staggered and slurred before registering .20 on a sobriety test—that's more than twice the legal limit.
Evidence suggesting Huff wanted special treatment has constituents outraged.
"He shouldn't keep his job, plain and simple," said a constituent.
"I think he should resign," said Giovonna Lodimeja. "If you make a blunder, you take responsibility and step down."
In a statement, Huff says he made a poor decision and he's prepared to face the consequences and regrets the pain he caused friends and family.
Huff also stated he will give back his county-owned vehicle.
He made no mention of leaving office.
Huff was released from custody a few hours after his arrest.
