Baltimore Co. Approves New Elementary School
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore County school board has voted to build an elementary school in the area of Mays Chapel Park despite opposition from neighbors.
The board unanimously approved plans for the new school on Tuesday. The 700-seat school is expected to open off Roundwood Road within two to three years to relieve overcrowding in the York Road corridor.
Neighbors said they were concerned about traffic and parking in the area and accused the school system of rushing to make a decision without considering other sites or solutions for the overcrowding.
Board president Lawrence Schmidt says the county purchased the land in the mid-1980s with the intent of building a school there one day. The new school will use up to half of the 20-acre site.
