Baltimore City Will Get A Second Walmart
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A big-time retailer is bringing big changes to Baltimore City. Monday night, the City Council approved plans to build a Walmart just north of downtown at 25th and Howard streets.
Kai Jackson explains this will be just the second Walmart within city limits.
The plan was approved by the Baltimore City Council and a variety of people have something to say about it.
By a near unanimous vote, the Baltimore City Council gave the zoning approval for a major north Baltimore development project that will bring a Walmart and Lowe's to 25th Street, a project called 25th Street Station.
"It will also provide jobs," said City Councilmember Belinda Conaway.
City leaders and supporters see economic opportunity. They believe the project will bring jobs and spur growth in the area.
"We know that this will bring jobs to the city of Baltimore. We know that this will make it easy for us to shop," said resident Bill Cunningham.
Remington residents rallied outside City Hall Monday, urging city leaders to fight for them and demand Walmart pay a livable wage.
Construction on the 25th Street Station Project could begin in spring of 2011.
