Baltimore City Names Educator Of The Year
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore City Schools has named its best educator of the year. She is from Mt. Washington Elementary.
Andrea Fujii shows us the surprise announcement in Northwest Baltimore.
Margaret May is the new city schools' teacher of the year.
"It means a lot to my career. I work hard," said May.
"She's always giving us a chance to learn something new in a fun and interactive way," said Eli Nass, student.
"She helps everyone if they need help," said Tyrin Hawkins, student.
The fifth-grade language arts and social studies teacher from Mt. Washington Elementary was chosen from 14 candidates, in part because of her love for books.
"We're here to help them learn and become better students and become lifelong learners and hopefully they love reading," said May.
"It's not just working out of a workbook. She does really interactive things," said Zoe Foringer-Laing, student.
May is now a candidate for Maryland teacher of the year. The state winner then goes on to the national competition. In fact, Frederick County chemistry teacher Michelle Shearer was just awarded the title by President Barack Obama.
It's been a tough year for May, as her mom -- who was also a teacher -- recently died of cancer, but the struggle's been a motivation.
"My mom's meant a lot to me and so I wanted to make sure these kids get everything they need to be able to move on and be successful," said May.
Mt. Washington was awarded the State Blue Ribbon Award last year.
