Baltimore City Group Launches Community Cleanup Program
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's a day full of neighbors helping neighbors. Baltimore City's Comprehensive Housing Assistance Program launches a community cleanup program.
As Tim Williams shows us, even the smallest hands can help.
Green-shirted volunteers and community members coming out to help their neighbors is a common sight around the Park Heights area of Northwest Baltimore.
"This is our daughter's school and we want to help out," said volunteer Rachel Vaks.
Volunteers for CHAI-- or Comprehensive Housing Assistance Inc.-- joined police cadets, businesses, church groups, synagogues and, in this case, Girl Scouts.
"Part of our Girl Scout is the Girl Scout Law and Girl Scout Motto and we have to be resourceful and use resources widely so our hands are today's resources," said Troop 1726 Scout Leader Atara Lazar.
They're embarking on beautification projects for those who can't do it all themselves.
"Having everybody here together shows the importance and the value of community and being out there to lend a helping hand," said Rabbi Chaim Amster.
More than 300 volunteers are expected to be in Park Heights for Good Neighbor Day. Some are learning the lesson of community at a very young age.
More than 100 cleanup efforts are underway. Alley cleanups and graffiti removal may just be for today but the values Good Neighbor Day instills will last far beyond.
The Good Neighbor Day will be an annual event.
