Baltimore City College Choir Will Perform At White House
BALTIMORE (WJZ)— There's lots of excitement in the halls of Baltimore City College. Some talented students at the school are getting ready for the trip of a lifetime.
Ron Matz has more on what's in store for some members of the school's world-renowned choir.
Some members of the Baltimore City College choir are going to the White House for two performances on Wednesday.
"I'm super excited. The chance to even be in the building with the president is absolutely mind-blowing. I'm really excited to do it. I want to meet the president and the first family, too," said Khadijah Juanae' Williams, Baltimore City College choir.
"There's so much that I'm thinking about. Mainly is just the fact we're performing at the White House. I always knew that we would get something big, but I never knew it would be the White House," said Abraham Matthews, junior at Baltimore City College and choir member.
Choir members are excited, and director Linda Hall is bursting with pride.
"It means the world to me, but more importantly it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our students. We have some great students. The choir members have been working very hard in the last few months, not just for the holiday season, but in preparation for performances such as this," said Hall.
About 20 of the choir's 95 members will be able to make the trip.
"It's very tight," Hall said. "We're only allowed to bring about 20 students. I wish we could take them all."
They'll leave the castle on the hill Wednesday morning heading to Washington, D.C.
"I had an informal conversation with the former president of our Friends of the Choir organization. I mentioned I would love to have the opportunity for us to perform at the White House while Barack Obama was the president. She just kind of shook her head and the next thing I know she was asking for information we had to send for audition purposes. I guess it just started out as a vision as I celebrate my 25th anniversary with the City College choir," said Hall. "One song we will definitely do is 'I'll Be Home For Christmas' in honor of our troops who may not have the opportunity to spend Christmas at home with their families," Hall said.
The City College choir has performed in France, Italy and Spain, and three years ago performed at Carnegie Hall.
