Baltimore Bacteria Tracker Keeping Tabs On Harbor
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimoreans have a new tool for keeping track of water conditions in the harbor and other city waterways.
Blue Water Baltimore says it is monitoring water conditions at 30 sites and posting the results online. Samples taken from the locations in the harbor and the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River are analyzed for bacteria that can indicate contamination by sewage and cause disease. The group says the monitoring will be conducted weekly from April to November. In addition to posting results online, the group plans to post signs at locations throughout the harbor.
Baltimore Harbor Waterkeeper Tina Meyers says getting real-time information about pollution will protect public health and raise awareness about the challenges faced in restoring the city's harbor.
