Backers Of WikiLeaks Suspect Seek More Defense Aid
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A support group for the Army private suspected of leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks says it'll need to raise more money than anticipated to pay for his defense.
Jeff Paterson of Oakland, Calif.-based Courage to Resist says in an e-mail to supporters that the group now seeks $170,000 for the defense of Private Bradley Manning. It had previously sought $120,000, but Paterson says delays in Manning's case and the possibility of the death penalty have raised projected legal fees.
Manning is suspected of leaking sensitive and classified documents to the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy group. The government filed new charges against him this month, including aiding the enemy, which can bring the death penalty or life imprisonment. Army prosecutors have notified Manning's defense team that they will not recommend the death penalty.
