Driver Rear-Ends MTA Bus, Sends A Dozen People To The Hospital
ESSEX, Md. (WJZ) -- A vehicle crashes into an MTA bus, sending a dozen people to the hospital in Essex.
Christie Ileto has more on the frightening accident.
Witnesses describe the accident as an explosion that happened steps from their homes and even described the passenger car that hit the bus as a tangled mess of metal.
A badly blighted car and an unblemished MTA bus sat in a pool of car parts and broken glass at Stemmers Road and Doolittle in Essex Wednesday morning.
"I was getting ready to get onto the bus, it just felt like the whole bus went three, four feet forward," said Mickey McQuiston.
The MTA says a driver rear-ended the bus, sending a dozen people to the hospital, including herself and her two small children.
Mickey McQuiston describes the wreck as jarring.
"I turned around, went behind the bus and the lady was laying there all bloodied up," he said.
"It was just like a bang, like a big bang, and then you just heard glass," said Lindsay Morris.
The MTA says one of their buses was stopped at a bus stop, letting people on and off, and somehow a woman plowed right into the back of the bus. The impact forced her to bounce back and hit a parked car.
"I heard somebody yell, 'There's kids in the car!' So I came up," a witness said.
Good Samaritans came running to help.
"I grabbed the baby from the one guy just for a few minutes, just to hold him and bounce him up and down and tell him that mom would be okay," Morris said.
As for the driver:
"I just talked to the lady, made sure she was responsive, kept just asking her questions," said McQuiston.
MTA says it's unclear why the driver ran into the bus.
There's still no word yet on the extent of the injuries of the passengers taken to the hospital.
Police have not said if the driver of the vehicle will face any charges. The crash remains under investigation.
