Assateague Beaches Reopen After Sweep For Ordnance
BERLIN, Md. (AP) -- Assateague beaches have reopened after an extensive search by the Army Corps of Engineers found no unexploded ordnance from World War II.
Crews spent two days sweeping the beaches for evidence of unexploded ordnance or debris. But they say they found nothing dangerous and that all items have been deemed inert.
Officials on Tuesday closed portions of North Ocean Beach and Assateague State Park beach after a visitor turned in an unexploded ordnance fragment dating from World War II, when the area was a testing site. Crews then found more than 100 pieces of debris and unexploded ordnance. They were destroyed through controlled blasts.
Officials say visitors should still remember that it's possible to find fragments, debris or other ordnance on the beach at any time.
