'Ask Me About My Dream': A Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—The city of Baltimore is once again getting ready to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Monique Griego was there Thursday as the mayor announced the plans.
It's a day that's marked by music and crowds of people all there to honor one man.
"It celebrates the life and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
Rawlings-Blake and other city leaders announced the theme for this year's MLK parade is "Ask me about my dream."
"We believe there is a generational responsibility to help young people as they dream and it's extremely important we be dream casters and not dream killers," said Alvin Gillard, Office of Civil Rights.
Just like in years past dancers, along with various marching bands and community groups, will fill the parade route.
This year organizers are expecting 30,000 people to gather and line the streets of downtown Baltimore.
"It really has [become] the people's parade," Gillard said.
The parade will start right at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Eutaw Street and then head south before ending at Baltimore Street.
This year's grand marshal will be Baltimore Colts legend and Hall of Famer Lenny Moore.
"Giving me the opportunity to be in this parade again, folks, I'm overwhelmed. I really am," Moore said.
The mayor said Moore is not only a great example of how someone can achieve their dreams but also a man who can help remind people what the day is really about.
"This parade reminds us of Dr. King's message of unity and peace," Rawlings-Blake said.
The parade is next Monday, Jan. 16. It kicks off at noon.
