Arrest Made In I-95 Road Rage Case
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- There are new details on a road rage arrest police made along I-95 in Maryland on Christmas Eve.
Derek Valcourt has a look at the suspect in that case and what police says he did.
We've all heard crazy road rage stories. This time, there were little kids in both of the cars involved---and one driver pointed a gun at another.
As millions of travelers made their way up and down I-95 on Christmas Eve, 33-year-old Ashanti Smalls was among them. As he drove north through Harford County with a woman in his passenger seat and a 14-month-old baby girl in the backseat, he became involved in a road rage incident---and that's when state police say the driver of the other car pulled into the lane next to him.
"He pointed a handgun at her; meanwhile, she's driving with her kids and her mother in the car," said Elana Russo, Maryland State Police.
That woman ducked down, slowed down and then called 911 with a description of Small's vehicle.
Sky Eye Chopper 13 was over 95 in Perryville a short time later, where state troopers blocked several lanes of traffic as they pulled over and searched Small's car, finding a 40 caliber handgun fully loaded with hollow point bullets.
"You certainly can't go around waving guns, but this is also a lesson for those who either have aggressive driving behaviors themselves or they witness it on the highway: don't get yourselves involved in these types of situations because who knows what's going to happen next," Russo said.
A prior felony conviction in his home state of Georgia means Smalls isn't allowed to have a gun at all. He faces charges for that, along with first degree assault, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of ammunition and illegal possession of a regulated firearm.
Smalls was able to post bail. He is out of jail. A court date has not been set.
There's no word on what triggered the road rage incident.
