Arrest Made In Brutal Christmas Eve Beating
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- For the first time, a man brutally attacked Christmas night is speaking out after Baltimore City police make an arrest in the case.
Rochelle Ritchie has more on the victim and why he says the charges against his alleged assailant are not enough.
The victim says his attackers targeted him because he is gay, and he wants them all to be charged with a hate crime.
Police say Marcus Evans is one of the men responsible for the brutal attack on 30-year-old Kenny Shaw as he walked home from a store on Hoffman and Milton.
"I didn't do anything. I was just going to this corner store," Shaw said.
Shaw's alleged assailant, 26-year-old Marcus Evans, now sits behind bars, charged with first and second degree assault--charges supporters say need to escalate.
"We know Kenny beat him brutally because he's gay, and we want them charged as a hate crime," said Rev. Kinji Scott.
It was Christmas night just before 9 p.m. when Shaw was walking home from the store. Before he knew it, he was on the ground, fighting for his life.
"It was 10 minutes of me being hit and me trying to fight for my life. I was trying to protect myself as well," Shaw said.
Shaw says Evans was not the only one attacking him that night. He's hoping the rest of his attackers are caught and thrown in jail.
His bruises are beginning to heal but the scars left on his heart are still deep.
"Mentally, that's another thing. Emotionally, that's another issue," Shaw said.
Evans is out on $100,000 bond.
This weekend, Police Commissioner Anthony Batts and a representative from the mayor's office attended a rally at the scene of the assault.
