Aronhalt Leads Maryland Past Wake Forest 86-60
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Logan Aronhalt scored 13 points, Alex Len had 12 points and nine rebounds and Maryland routed Wake Forest 86-60 on Saturday for its most lopsided Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season.
Jake Layman added 12 points on four 3-pointers, Seth Allen and James Padgett also scored 12 points apiece and Dez Wells had 11 for the Terrapins (16-6, 4-5), who have won five straight against the Demon Deacons (10-11, 3-6) and improved to 14-1 at home this season.
Travis McKie's 15 points matched a season high but couldn't prevent Wake Forest from dropping its third consecutive game and falling to 0-5 in ACC road games. Codi Miller-McIntyre scored 14 for the Deacons.
Maryland connected on 35 of 52 shots from the floor (67.3 percent) and outrebounded Wake Forest 42-21 to snap a two-game skid.
The Terrapins' previous biggest margin of victory in a conference game this season came in a 94-71 home win over Virginia Tech on Jan. 5.
Three days after blowing a lead late in a 73-71 loss at Florida State, Maryland shot 73.9 percent from the field in the opening half (17 of 23). Taking command early against a foe starting three freshmen, the Terrapins sprinted to a 42-25 lead at halftime.
Len hit a short jumper from the left baseline and followed a miss with a slam, igniting a 16-2 run that expanded a 12-9 lead. Maryland held the Demon Deacons scoreless for a 7:09 span midway through the first half, with Wake Forest missing on 11 straight shots and twice turning the ball over.
McKie's three-point play got Wake Forest within 28-19 with 7:15 remaining in the first half, but Maryland reeled off the next eight points for a 17-point cushion. Wells finished off a 3-on-1 break, Padgett connected on a jump-hook, Allen knocked down a right-wing 3 and Charles Mitchell contributed a free throw during the spree.
The Terrapins led by as many as 30 in the second half.
