Armed Robbery Has CCBC Essex Students Concerned

ESSEX, Md. (WJZ) ― An armed bandit robs a local college student on campus. It happened in broad daylight in parking lot on the Essex campus of the Baltimore County Community College.

Kai Jackson spoke with students who are concerned they were never notified of the potential danger.

The armed robbery has some students nervous and calling on school administrators to ratchet up campus security.

The robbery happened Thursday evening on the CCBC Essex campus. Officers say a student leaving class heading to her car was approached by a man she didn't know, and then she was robbed.

"The subject placed a hard object in the back of the victim. The victim believed the object to be a gun. The victim then gave the suspect her money and her wallet," said Rob McCollugh, Baltimore County police.

Police say the suspect got the victim's attention by yelling "hey tiger" because she was wearing a Towson tigers jacket. At that point he pushed the victim against her car and put an object in her back.

The crime has gotten the attention of these students:

"I think it's pretty scary since it's armed robbery," said CCBC student David Fitzwater. "Who knows where he went if he was never apprehended."

"I've never seen security at night, and they said to call if you want an escort, but there's only so many security," said Kristian Daily, another CCBC student.

Students told WJZ that faculty members were notified about the armed robbery, but apparently students were not. That, the students say, is unacceptable.

"They tell teachers, but not students?" said Kimberly Otes, CCBS student . "I don't think that's fair. If one should know, they all should know."

Students say they want campus alerts, lighting that's consistent and on longer, and a greater sense of security.

"I think it's crazy how we have all these security guards and not one was in sight when this happened," said Charles Caswell, CCBC student.

Baltimore County police say the victim was not hurt. The suspect is described as a white male, 19-25 years old, 6 feet tall, and about 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and running in the direction of Rossville Boulevard.

If you have any information, you are asked to contact Baltimore County police.

Baltimore County police say they have no information to suggest a crime problem on the CCBC Essex campus.
