Apartment Fire Destroys Historic Md. Building, Displaces 12
BETTERTON, Md. (AP) -- Officials say a fire has destroyed a historic building in Kent County, Md.
The fire broke out early Thursday at the Maplewood Apartments on Main Street in Betterton. Officials say one 71-year-old man was injured when he jumped from a second-floor unit. He was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with a leg injury, but no others were injured.
The office of the State Fire Marshal says it took 45 firefighters, including several companies from Delaware, four hours to control the blaze.
The American Red Cross is assisting 12 residents left homeless by the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The 1920s-era building was originally a hotel in an area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The damaged building was torn down midday Thursday.
