Anne Arundel Co. Executive Leopold Lifts Water Restrictions And Keeps Cooling Centers Open
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ)-- Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold has lifted restrictions on water use throughout the county, except for Herald Harbor, and has ordered that cooling centers remain open until power is restored to the remaining 40,000 homes and businesses.
"Our priority now is to ensure that our most vulnerable citizens have options to stay cool and hydrated while power is restored. Temperatures this week will remain high, and we are urging everyone to use caution in this hot weather," County Executive Leopold said.
Water treatment plants and approximately 65 pumping stations are operating on generator power, but residents who are not in the Herald Harbor service area can start using public water for laundry and outdoor needs. Residents are encouraged to bring their own water containers to the Broadcreek Water Treatment Plant, located at 165 Truman Parkway in Annapolis, which is open until 5 p.m. for residents needing potable water.
The Department of Public Works is currently managing 178 service requests, but all major intersections are clear. Due to downed power lines, 23 roads remain closed and 18 are partially blocked.
"I have spoken with BGE President Ken DeFontes, and he assures me that out-of-state crews are arriving today to assist with the removal of downed power lines and repair of damaged substations," County Executive Leopold said. "In the meantime, I am pleased that we have been able to assist businesses, families and even their pets, stay cool and hydrated."
