Alleged Carjacker And Robber Arrested In Baltimore Co.
BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Residents in the Mount Carmel area of Baltimore County are breathing a sigh of relief.
Andrea Fujii reports an alleged carjacker and robber who was on the loose for days is now in jail.
David Lee Carmichael, 50, is behind bars and no one is happier about that then Joe Ensor, who says Carmichael held him at gunpoint May 21.
"He had a gun in his hand, and I knew right there I was in trouble and I had to cooperate," Ensor said.
Hours earlier, police say Carmichael began a crime spree in quiet Mount Carmel at a gas station, holding an employee at gunpoint and demanding cash. He then allegedly drove up Mount Carmel Road. Police say he flipped his vehicle near a tree farm and then fled on foot, eluding police all night.
They say Carmichael managed to run and hide in the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, where Ensor, the custodian, was working.
"He was carrying a white towel and he put that up to his face and said 'Don't look at me. You cooperate and nothing will happen to you,'" said Ensor.
After 45 minutes Ensor says Carmichael took off with his truck. Five days later police caught up with him.
"They obtained an arrest warrant and arrested him May 25 in Oxon Hill, Maryland in Prince George's County," said Baltimore County Police spokesman Robert McCullough.
"You never expect anything like that to happen here, and hopefully it won't happen again," said Ensor.
Carmichael is being held in the Baltimore County Detention Center. He was denied bail.
