All Eyes On University Of Maryland Men And Women's Basketball Teams
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJZ) -- Let's go Terps! March Madness is here. The lady Terps are undefeated in the Big Ten and the men are having one of their most successful seasons ever.
Tracey Leong has the excitement building for both teams.
All eyes are on the University of Maryland. Both teams are moving on to the Big Ten Conference. The women are ranked number one. The men are ranked number two.
The lady Terps are undefeated in the Big Ten. It's a rare accomplishment and only the third time to ever happen in the conference.
"Being considered as a women's basketball powerhouse. We're getting to the point where we're like a U Conn, or like a Stanford or like a Tennessee. And that is super exciting," said Anne Turkos, University of Maryland archivist.
Turkos is the school's archivist. She has been tracking the team's success.
The men's team is number two in the conference, making the University of Maryland the only school to have both their women's and men's team in the top ten.
"Everyone is like, 'Oh, Big Ten competition. I don't know if we're going to be able to live up to the rigors of Big Ten competition.' But to see us come out so strong in men's and women's basketball, particularly women's basketball, has been tremendously exciting I think for the entire campus," said Turkos.
The players' achievements are earning the school national attention.
"It's definitely a great time to be here," said Patrick Woods, UMd. student.
"I guess it's good for the university. We get that athletic spotlight and we get that academic spotlight, too," said student Seth Vinson.
Fellow students are rooting for their success.
"Get the 'W,' that's all that matters," said Woods.
Making this a school to look out for.
"Couldn't be a better recruiting tool for women's basketball," said Turkos.
Both of the conferences will take place in Chicago. The women kick off this Friday, March 6. The men start on March 13.
