Air Travelers Experiencing Delays, Canceled Flights
GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ)--A strong winter storm is still slamming the eastern coast and impacting air and rail travel.
Mike Hellgren reports from BWI Marshall airport, where hundreds of flights were canceled.
Wind whips a dusting of snow around planes at BWI Marshall.
Those who got out or landed were the lucky few, as airlines canceled most flights at the airport.
"You've just got to deal with it, you know," said one air traveler. "Since I've been here, I've been checking the forecast with a friend of mine."
"I'm not sure if we'll get out tomorrow back to Seattle or what," said another.
Many airlines are not charging to change tickets.
The cancellations are largely due to weather at other big hubs—and air carriers not wanting to send planes to the east coast, where they could get stuck.
"The airlines are aware of the scope of this storm in terms of its size impacting quite a bit of the east coast," said Jonathan Dean, BWI Marshall spokesperson. "The airlines have acted proactively to position their aircraft away from the areas affected by storm."
The light rail is running on time, service as scheduled. As for trains—only two of them on board at Penn Station were on time.
Amtrak canceled all service from New York to Boston. And trains are running between New York and Washington, D.C. with delays.
"I was a little concerned about delays, but right now my train's on time, so I have nothing to worry about yet," said one passenger.
The strong winds—combined with service interruptions to the north and south of Baltimore—could delay travel through Monday, with several airlines already canceling flights in the morning.
"We're not going home. We're leaving home and going to Florida where it's warmer," said one air traveler. "No, we can't get there today. Tomorrow morning, early."
Those of you traveling on Marc trains on Monday, Marc has decided to run at regular scheduled service instead of snow service. Riders should expect some delays because of slippery conditions.
