ACLU Releases Documents On Background Searches
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland is renewing its call for explanations about criminal history database searches of people on an enemies list of Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold.
The ACLU released more findings on Tuesday after making public information act requests with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and the state police.
The ACLU says the records show unjustified background searchers were conducted on Lewis Bracy, a National Security Agency law enforcement official, former Anne Arundel County Councilman Thomas Redmond and Carl Snowden, a longtime civil rights leader.
Leopold, a Republican, has been indicted for allegedly misusing his county police protection squad. He has pledged to fight the charges. The indictment alleges Leopold directed on-duty executive protection officers to create dossiers on political challengers.
