ACLU Calls On Hogan To Withhold $5M For Private Schools

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The ACLU of Maryland and the state's teachers' union are calling on Gov. Larry Hogan to withhold $5 million in state funding for private school vouchers.

The groups made the call Friday after the Republican governor's budget chief announced Hogan would not spend $80 million that lawmakers set aside for various programs due to softening revenues.

The administration says it will look for savings elsewhere to make up for some of the withheld $80 million. But budget secretary David Brinkley said Wednesday about $19 million to support local shares of teacher pensions "principally benefits very wealthy jurisdictions."

The groups want Hogan to send the $5 million set aside for private school vouchers to public schools instead.
