The Busiest Travel Day Of The Year Is Here
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—There are some headaches for Marylanders traveling on the eve of Thanksgiving. Big crowds hit the airport, the roads and the train station, trying to get to their holiday visits.
Kai Jackson spoke with people traveling late into the night.
Thanksgiving travelers are on the move, trying to get to their destinations.
It's the day before Thanksgiving, the busiest travel day of the year in America. In 2012, this one lives up to the hype.
"I never get to see my family, you know, so any chance I get to go home, I take it," one traveler said.
The train remains a popular way to travel but Amtrak reports that a power failure in New York caused a logistical nightmare, delaying service to places like Baltimore.
Apparently Amtrak passengers and local commuters waited more than an hour because of switching problems.
Alexander Bacon is from Towson but lives in New York. He made it into Baltimore's Penn Station before the delay happened.
"When you need to get home quickly and you don't wanna deal with traffic, it's the safest bet," Bacon said.
Many of those who decided to drive made pit stops at places like the popular Chesapeake House on I-95 in Cecil County.
"DC was a mess. It took us so long to get through there. Virginia and DC and Baltimore were terrible," said Patricia Lister.
Hopefully, the anxiety and frustration of traveling during Thanksgiving is offset by the joy of being with family and friends and a home cooked meal.
The Thanksgiving travel period is Wednesday through Sunday.
