Ex-Virginia First Lady Maureen McDonnell Sentenced To 1 Year
RICHMOND. Va. (WJZ)--Tragic, sad, puzzling. The judge had those words today as he sentenced former Virginia first lady Maureen McDonnell to a year and a day in prison. She and her husband, former Governor Bob McDonnell were convicted in September in a corruption scheme involving luxury gifts, cash and favors.
Mary Bubala has the details.
Expensive Louis Vuitton shoes, part of more than $20,000 in designer clothes for her. A $6,000 Rolex for him and expensive vacations for both --that included the use of a Ferarri.
Just some of the more than $165,000 in gifts and cash the McDonnells were convicted of taking from CEO Jonnie Williams in exchange for promoting his company.
Now, Maureen McDonnell could become the first modern-day governor's spouse sent to prison for felonies she was convicted of committing while was in the governor's mansion.
The 12 months and one day sentence came after an emotional hearing that included Maureen McDonnell's first real comments about the case.
The former governor was sentenced last month to two years behind bars. He's free - awaiting an appeal.
Prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 18 months for Maureen McDonnell.
