7 Displaced By Elkton House Fire

ELKTON, Md. (AP) -- Two firefighters were injured and seven people were displaced after a fire broke out in an Elkton duplex.

The state fire marshal's office says the blaze broke out just after noon on Friday in the home on Church Street and it took about 50 firefighters about an hour and 45 minutes to bring it under control.

One firefighter suffered a heart attack and was taken to Christiana Hospital. Elkton Fire Chief Bill McCall says a second firefighter tripped while saving a tortoise and dislodged his ventilator. He was treated for moderate smoke inhalation.

Seven residents of the two homes are being assisted by the Red Cross and a dog perished in the blaze. Damage to the structure is estimated at $230,000. The cause is under investigation.
