Ailing Jewish Weekly Paper Cuts Jobs, Contracts Out Work
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A long-established but financially ailing Jewish weekly newspaper in Philadelphia is transferring editorial management and production to a Baltimore-Washington area media company and cutting jobs.
The Jewish Exponent said Wednesday it was eliminating 15 of 27 positions as part of its affiliation with Mid-Atlantic Media.
The newspaper said Mid-Atlantic will hire a team of four writers and a managing editor to work in Philadelphia. They will report to an editor-in-chief in Baltimore who has been the Exponent's news editor and religious columnist.
The Exponent bills itself as the nation's second-oldest continuously published Jewish newspaper, tracing its roots to 1887.
The newspaper says bold changes were needed. It says the paper has been losing $300,000 a year and has been able to keep publishing only with support from its owner, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.
