5-Game Suspension For O's Manny Machado Upheld
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- One of the Orioles' best players is suspended starting now. Major League Baseball upheld a five-game suspension for third baseman Manny Machado.
Christie Ileto explains Machado's heat of the moment action has major consequences.
It was the bat throwing incident against Oakland earlier this month that has Machado serving his five-game suspension that starts now.
"I'm not going to sit here and smile about it," Machado said.
Machado spoke candidly as fans watched their team play one man down with a 24-man roster in Monday's game against the Texas Rangers.
"That's what sucks about this whole thing. I've got to sit here and watch the games and know I can't be out there on the field helping my team," he said.
Marchado immediately appealed his June 10 suspension. He spoke for about an hour at his appeal hearing, but was unable to sway the league's decision.
"It's not like something that was unexpected, we just weren't sure about the length," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
The baller's bad behavior on the field has fans on both sides of the fence.
"I just feel like five games is a lot compared to the pitcher who got none for basically starting the altercation," said Antwan Bolden.
Some argue it's excessive, while others:
"I'm indifferent. Five games could be too much, but I think he should be a role model for the other kids," said Tiffany Oxendine.
But for the third baseman, it's a lesson learned.
"Don't do it again. You don't want to get in a situation, nobody wants to be in it. You just learn from all of this and just try to put this one behind me," Machado said.
Machado misses the four-game series against the Texas Rangers. He also misses the first game against Boston this Friday.
Oakland A's pitcher Fernando Abad was also fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing at Machado.
