5 Athletes That Made TIME's 'Top 100' List
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- TIME magazine revealed the 2016 list of '100 Most Influential People' earlier today. Among the names of actors, artists, politicians and more, there are a handful of sports world figures that made the list.
Ronda Rousey was named one of TIME Magazine's Top 100 Icons by actress Tina Fey. Ronda is a UFC fighter. Most recently, she had her first-ever UFC loss to Holly Holm.
PGA Tour Star Jordan Spieth was named a TIME 100 Icon because he "exemplifies everything that's great about sports," wrote Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Spieth already has a pair of major championship titles under his belt and recently went far in the Masters tournament.
Ziggy Marley compared Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt to his father Bob Marley: "They both grew up in very modest circumstances and went on to make positive change on the world stage." This summer in Rio, Usain will most likely run his last Olympic race.
Steph Curry was named one of the Top 100 Titans because "he combines a never-before-seen skill set with the panache and flair of a great performance artist," writes ballet dancer Misty Copeland. Curry won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 2015 and led the Warriors to their first championship since 1975. In 2016, he has led his team to the most wins in an NBA season.
Katie Ledecky recently won the 800-meter freestyle by nearly 15 seconds at the Arena Pro Swim meet Saturday night, her third victory in three days just over two months before the U.S. Olympic swimming trials. Former competition swimmer Janet Evans wrote, "What I like most is that Katie doesn't worry about the expectations that others may put on her. She has a maturity and singular focus that is an inspiration for people of all ages, in all walks of life."
