Man Stabbed After Possible Road Rage Incident; Charges Filed
GAMBRILLS, Md. (WJZ)— Road rage spiraled out of control in Anne Arundel County when a father was stabbed right in front of his children.
Andrea Fujii has the dramatic story of how it all went down Monday afternoon.
Chaos broke out as two cars collided in a ditch along Route 3.
"For it to happen in my own backyard...kind of opens your eyes a little," said witness Joshua Thompson.
It started at a nearby red light. Witnesses say the 44-year-old driver of an SUV was celebrating with his wife and kids.
"Apparently he had just gotten married today. I don't know if that's true but that's what I heard," Thompson said.
He got into an altercation with the 23-year-old passenger of a PT Cruiser and got out of his car. That's when witnesses say the other man pulled a knife and stabbed him.
"There was a gentleman who got out of his car and it looked like he had grease all over his shirt but it turned out to be blood," said witness Jim Paugels.
Police say the victim jumped in his car, chased down the PT Cruiser and rammed it into a ditch. The victim went after his assailant.
"He hit him in the face, knocked him to the ground. He was bleeding from the face pretty profusely," Paugels said.
Pictures were snapped in the aftermath of the crash by workers of Honda Power Sports of Crofton.
"There were kids running around, dogs. Luckily, nobody else got hurt," Paugels said.
Investigators are now combing the area where the crash happened, searching for the knife and for answers into how a highway dispute escalated to this level.
"This was an exceedingly dangerous situation and we're very lucky no one got killed," said Lt. Glenn Shanahan.
Police believe the assailant was also stabbed during one of the altercations.
Route 3 was closed in the northbound direction at McKnew Road for a short period of time during the investigation. It does not appear at this time that any of the parties involved knew each other.
The passenger of the PT Cruiser, Ross Brandon Sudbrook, was treated and released from Shock Trauma. The victim was also treated and released from another hospital. Sudbrook was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and carrying a dangerous weapon with intent to injure.
