3 Fishermen Rescued From Frigid Chesapeake Bay
ST. LEONARD, Md. (AP) -- Natural Resources Police say life jackets helped save the lives of three fishermen after their vessel capsized in frigid waters in the Chesapeake Bay.
Police say the 21-foot boat capsized Thursday morning when a 4- to 5-foot wave came over the stern at the Calvert Cliffs Power Plant discharge, throwing the men into the 30 degree water.
Sgt. Shawn Garren says the life jackets kept the three men afloat until a nearby fishing vessel responded to their calls for help about 10 minutes later. He says the cold water was already affecting the trio's muscles, speech and mental awareness and one man could not even remember what happened to him.
Police say the men were taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital, where they were treated for hypothermia.
