Md. Woman Claims $2 Million Powerball Ticket Sold In Edgewood
EDGEWOOD, Md. (WJZ)—There is a Maryland woman shouting for joy. She didn't win the big Powerball jackpot, but she is taking home some cool cash.
Monique Griego reports from Edgewood, where the winner bought the ticket.
The winner says this all happened because of one huge mistake.
The frenzy for tickets was insane. People lined up to buy their chance to win a record-setting $588 million Powerball jackpot.
"Unimaginable. I can't even fathom that kind of money," one woman said.
On Wednesday night, the lucky numbers rolled in. And while ticket holders in Arizona and Missouri would learn they hit the jackpot, in Harford County, a millionaire was also made at Herb's Deli and Spirits in Edgewood.
WJZ was there as she picked up her $2 million prize.
"I think I slept on my pocketbook last night. I didn't want to go to sleep. I'm like, 'I'm going to go to sleep and wake up and this is just going to be a dream. I didn't win nothing,'" said Almerta Williams.
With her family by her side, Williams explained how she picked five of the six numbers by accident.
"By me not being able to see 'cause I need glasses, I marked a 5 instead of the 3. That's how I ended up winning the $2 million," Williams said.
In Edgewood, news is running about the millionaire. Ken Foster was the one who sold the winning ticket.
"I had my hand on $2 million," Foster said.
"I think it's pretty sweet," one customer said.
Walter Washington's barber shop is abuzz with talk, especially because many people knew the winner.
"I was dealing with it better knowing that it was in Arizona, and I didn't have a chance of winning. But now that it was so close, that's a little hard to swallow. But other than that, I'm happy for her," Washington said.
Williams says she plans to buy a house and an 80- inch flat screen. And she told her niece one important thing.
"Whatever you do, do not put it on Facebook," she said.
As for Williams, she says she still plans to work.
Herb's Deli and Spirits isn't losing out either for selling that ticket. They get $5,000. They say they're going to use it to spruce up the store.
Lottery officials say there were 10 $10,000 tickets sold in Maryland.
The numbers drawn for Wednesday night, for the second-highest jackpot in U.S. lottery history, were 5, 16, 22, 23, 29. The Powerball was 6.
