2 Maryland Businesses To Benefit From O'Malley's India Trade Trip
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Maryland sends the largest delegation in the United States to India with a goal of bringing jobs back to the state.
Political reporter Pat Warren has more on the expected benefits of the trip.
Maryland YouTubed through Asia with Governor Martin O'Malley on his trade mission to China in June, making a pitch for Maryland business.
On the governor's 10-day mission there, J&R Seafood on the Eastern Shore grew its export business, translating to jobs at home.
"We'll probably hire now 30 to 40 more seasonal jobs, which because of this trip will turn into full-time jobs," said Lin Hwang, J&R Seafood.
That and other successes in China have led to this mission in India.
"The papers are full of story after story of Maryland, the United States losing the jobs to countries like China and India," O'Malley said in a phone interview. "What we need to do a better job of doing as a people is emphasizing those stories where we're creating jobs."
A story the O'Malley delegation is writing on this trip to India.
On a conference call Tuesday morning the governor reported two Maryland businesses so far have landed contracts in India.
Businessmen with the governor on the trip say the mission creates opportunities for jobs and expansion they might not otherwise get.
