2 Guards Fired After Escape From Garrett Co. Jail
OAKLAND, Md. (AP) -- Garrett County Sheriff Rob Corley says two correctional officers have been fired in connection with an inmate's escape from the county jail in January.
Corley told the Cumberland Times-News on Tuesday that the officers were replaced as a result of a continuing investigation into the escape of Deandre Kelly of Washington.
Corley says he's working with the county commissioners to improve safety conditions at the jail.
The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is investigating the jailbreak.
Kelly allegedly assaulted the officers after showing them what appeared to be handgun and forcing them to open a holding cell. He was arrested Monday in Bedford, Va., after more than three months at large.
A grand jury has indicted him and eight alleged co-conspirators in the escape.
