2-Alarm Fire Damages Businesses & Apartments In Remington
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A two-alarm fire rips through a building in North Baltimore, damaging businesses and apartments.
Mike Schuh reports crews stayed on the scene of the fire in Remington late into the night as they tried to figure out how it started.
Smoke billowed high into the sky over North Baltimore Wednesday evening.
A two-alarm fire broke out in the 2700-block of Sisson Street in Remington around 6:30 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was already coming through the roof on the warehouse's south side.
"Immediately the incident commander sounded a second alarm for additional units when they realized the size of the building. This building appears to be 100x100," said Captain Roman Clark, Baltimore City Fire Department.
The building houses four auto shops on the first floor and 22 rental spaces, including an art gallery, studios and residences, on the second floor.
Fire officials say they needed to call additional crews to the scene for a possible hazmat situation.
"We brought in our hazmat task force due to the fact there are some materials inside there that if they are burning, could be a little bit hazardous," said Clark.
One former employee believed the fire started in one of the second floor spaces.
There is no word on how many people who live in the apartments on the second floor are displaced.
The art gallery in this building is called "Open Space." It's not clear if the flames had spread to that gallery.
The investigation is expected to continue Thursday. There's still no word on a cause.
One firefighter was treated for minor injuries. No one who lives or works in that building was hurt.
