2 Accused Of Fraudulently Getting Social Security
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Two Baltimore women have been indicted on charges of fraudulently obtaining Social Security benefits using information they obtained by telling victims they had won a lottery in Jamaica.
Thirty-five-year-old Scerena Simpson Genus and 50-year-old Doreen Spence were indicted Thursday.
The seven-count superseding indictment alleges that conspirators in Jamaica called the victims, who were Social Security beneficiaries, and told them they had won the Jamaican National Lottery. Prosecutors say the conspirators got identifying information from the victims and used that to apply for debit cards.
Authorities say Spence and Genus received the debit cards and used the cards to make purchases and cash withdrawals at ATMs in Maryland.
