17-Year-Old Boy Faces Child Porn Charges After Posting Explicit Pictures On Instagram
EDGEWATER, Md. (WJZ)-- An Anne Arundel County teenager could face time in juvenile detention after police say he posted sexually explicit and nude photos of teenage girls from various high schools across several counties.
Rochelle Ritchie spoke with school officials about what disciplinary action the boy could face---and the warning they have about sexting.
The teenager is now charged with child pornography. School officials say until they know more abut where and when the photos were taken and posted, disciplinary action remains up in the air.
A Southern High School student is now facing child pornography charges after Anne Arundel County police say he posted sexual photos of teenage girls on the social media website Instagram.
"These are some serious charges," said Lt. TJ Smith.
Police say from March until July, they investigated who was in the nude photos and their efforts led them to a 17-year-old boy.
"These are serious charges and he's facing these charges as a juvenile so you could find yourself in a juvenile prison, so to speak," said Smith.
Anne Arundel County police say parents need to warn their students about not only posting nude photos but also sending them.
Police say the student received the photos from female students from various schools across several counties, and would post the pictures and name the school the girl attended.
The teen is not in police custody and could be in school next week despite the charges against him.
"To apply those disciplinary sanctions, there has to be a connection to school activities," said Bob Mosier, Anne Arundel County public schools.
Though the teenager and the victims are in the same age group, police say that doesn't change the severity of the crime.
"People think because they are in the same age group, they can transmit these pictures of one another, but it is actually child pornography," said Smith.
Police say while some of the photos were taken by the girls themselves, some of them gave consent for their pictures to be taken by someone else.
The identity of the student is not being released.
