Police: 13-Year-Old Girl Killed, 2 Others Injured In Middle River Shooting
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore County Police are searching for a killer in the shooting death of a 13-year-old girl.
Investigators say Ayeonna Watkins and a group of men were sitting in an area behind the 7-Eleven in the 700 block of Peterson Road late Monday, just before midnight, when someone came up and started firing shots, killing Ayeonna and wounding two others.
Jonathan McCall says detectives, officers, and forensic investigators have been combing the parking lot all day long.
Video obtained by WJZ shows the last moments of Watkins's life, right before the shots were fired.
A man who lives nearby says he rushed into his house when he heard those shots ring out.
"All of a sudden, gunshots," he says. "It sounded like fireworks. I didn't even know until there was a young lady howling."
Other neighbors say they heard anywhere between eight and 10 shots total.
Ayeonna was struck several times and died at the scene, according to Baltimore County Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Peach.
At some point while the group was gathered behind the convenience store, "somebody from the alley behind them began to shoot into their crowd," Peach says.
"We have heard rumors that there was a previous altercation with this group of individuals earlier in the night."
People in the community say they are outraged, and want justice for Ayeonna.
"I hope they be found for the justice for the family because it's sad," says Jessica Brown.
Investigators are trying to piece together whether one person in the group was a target, or if it was the entire group.
Another thing detectives are trying to figure out is if they are looking for one shooter or multiple shooters.
The men who were injured in the shooting are expected to be OK.
