PLANO (CBS11) -  Children's Health broke ground Friday on a new one-of-a kind sports medicine facility dedicated to youth athletes.

The new four-story, 185,000 square-foot Children's Health Andrews Institute for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Plano will be complete in 2017.

World-renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, whose patient list reads like a who's who of professional sports, will help develop and direct the facility.

Andrews said what will set this medical facility apart from others is an emphasis on youth sports research.

Every year nearly 2.6 million children suffered sports-related injuries.

"If we can do what we plan to do and really get involved in research, prevention, and education then we will be unique," he said.

The building will include four operating rooms, an imaging center, and physical therapy space.

It will also feature indoor and outdoor athletic fields, including a half-size football field and running track.

Dr. Andrews said, "Our goal here and mission is to keep them on the playing field and out of the operating room."
