FORT WORTH (CBS11) – Loved ones of 18-year-old Andrew Medford gathered at Paschal High School in Fort Worth Thursday night to mourn the loss of the beloved baseball player and friend.

Medford died early Thursday morning after losing control of his car and crashing into a concrete barrier on the Chisholm Trail Parkway, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The young man was a baseball standout at Paschal and had earned a scholarship to pitch for the TCU where he had committed to last November.

His high school coach Darrell Preston was among the dozens who came out to pay their respects to Medford.

"My heart sank, because you spent so much time with these kids they feel like they are your own," said Preston.

Medford's teammate Cruz Shope added, "I'm going to remember him as being an amazing person."

Medford's abilities on the diamond where undoubtedly spectacular, but it was his ability to be a great friend that many of the young men and women who came out to his vigil say they will remember.

"I wouldn't be where I was without him," said Shope. "He has pushed me every day in practice and stuff like that just to get better and better"

No one else was hurt in the crash that killed Medford, and investigators say they are still trying to determine what caused him to lose control.
