World Cup Watch Party Brings Thousands To Dallas
DALLAS, TX (CBSDFW.COM) - Thousands of people were at Klyde Warren Park on Sunday for the biggest World Cup watch party in north Texas. It was an exciting game and an emotional roller-coaster, but it wasn't quite the outcome fans were hoping for.
Hopes were high that the U.S. Men's National Team would win over Portugal to guarantee them a spot in the next round of the World Cup. Portugal would have been out of the tournament with a loss.
More than three thousand fans packed the park for the first watch party of it's kind. Even the vuvuzela - the noise making horn which was so popular during the 2010 world cup - made an appearance.
Portugal scored first but fans didn't give up hope, and for good reason. After the U.S. scored midway through the second half fans watched intently as the U.S. pressed Portugal and finally got a second goal. The elated crowd celebrated and cheered even louder as Oak Cliff's own Omar Gonzalez made his World Cup debut.
But the emotional high came to an abrupt end when Portugal scored an equalizer with a minute to play.
Despite the disappointment, many fans at the party said there's still hope the U.S. will go to the next round.
