IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - A woman who was working out early Tuesday morning was stabbed multiple times with a screwdriver. This happened at about 5:30 a.m. at the 24 Hour Fitness location along Highway 183 near Story Road in Irving.

Police said that a man attacked the woman, and a witness recalled seeing the man pull the victim off of a treadmill and stab her in the back with a screwdriver several times while she was on the floor. But the victim and the male suspect do not know each other, authorities added. The motive for the attack is not known.

"He had on a long trench coat and gray sweatpants," said witness Ivory Tabb. "Just odd to be in the gym."

"All of a sudden, we hear a woman scream, and I jump off the treadmill to go help her because I felt like she fell off the treadmill," Tabb continued. "Then, we see other men rushing over and we see them pulling off the attacker."

The victim was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. She is expected to survive her injuries. Her name has not yet been released.

"She was face-down on the floor and he was attacking her in the back with a screwdriver," Tabb stated, adding that the suspect was mumbling something. Gym workers put pressure on her back and neck before an ambulance arrived.

The suspect was held by several other gym employees until police officers could arrive at the scene to take the man into custody. The suspect has not been identified, but officials said that he was a member of the gym. He is now behind bars in Irving.

Business has returned to usual at the 24 Hour Fitness location. But some customers are a bit nervous by the seemingly random attack. "I'm a little bit scared now," said customer Cecilia Davila. "I'm going to try to come during the day now. Even though that is 24 hours, I'm just going to try to come when the sun is out."
